Peab is a group with four collaborating business areas: construction, civil engineering, industry and project development. Its operations are represented across the Nordic countries. To meet the new requirements under the CSRD, <a href=\"https:\/\/peab.se\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/peab.se\/\">Peab<\/a> needed to take a broader approach to its emissions \u2013 especially Scope 3, the impact from purchased products and services that is often hidden across large numbers of accounts and transactions.   <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI as a tool \u2013 not the solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project focused on Scope 3 Category 1: purchased goods and services \u2013 the most complex part of Scope 3.<br\/>In total, around 6,000 accounts from different Peab companies were analysed. An account is a cost category for purchases of a certain product, service or other expense. Using the Exiobase database, climate impact can be calculated based on the type of expenditure associated with different accounts. To make it possible to handle this amount of data, an AI model was developed together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iconsof.se\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iconsof.se\/\">IconsOf<\/a>.    <br\/><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9ba6dbca wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\u201cPeab has already done a great deal of work on materials with a high CO\u2082 impact, such as asphalt, concrete and bitumen. This manual classification formed the basis for training the AI. Milj\u00f6giraff has previously carried out a large number of environmental spend analyses and has extensive experience of classification using Exiobase. The AI model then went through several iterations, with adjustments and verification carried out until it produced stable and reliable results.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result? An efficient and scalable way for Peab to generate complete Scope 3 data. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us at Milj\u00f6giraff, it is important that AI does not take over. We remain in control, while AI serves as a tool that makes it possible to process volumes of data that would otherwise be practically impossible to handle. In addition to being more efficient, the AI can analyse each transaction and account in greater detail. This means it can dig deeper into individual transactions than would realistically be possible in a manual classification process. By measuring and gaining better control of our emissions, we can manage and monitor progress towards our climate targets more effectively, while also helping our customers with better climate data.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\">\u2013 Sofie Johansson, Project Manager, PEAB<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A robust methodology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important requirement from Peab was that the methodology had to be reliable enough to withstand external review. Transparency and traceability were therefore ensured at every stage \u2013 from the initial classification to the final reporting of results. Peab also had the methodology reviewed by an auditing firm, where it was approved.  <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iconsof.se\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iconsof.se\/\">IconsOf<\/a>, we developed an iterative model in which the AI\u2019s interpretation was compared with actual expenditure data until we could determine that the results remained within acceptable margins of deviation. This created both confidence and precision. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the help of AI, the model is also dynamic from one year to the next. The following year, all accounts can be processed using the same algorithm, while changes in purchasing patterns generate new classifications and updated results. In this way, the model provides a highly representative picture of Peab\u2019s purchasing year after year.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9ba6dbca wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From climate requirements to competitive advantage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peab\u2019s Scope 3 work is an example of how companies can turn complex reporting requirements into a clear advantage. By creating a climate footprint across the entire value chain \u2013 including smaller but harder-to-capture purchases \u2013 companies gain both a more complete picture of their climate impact and a stronger basis for decision-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\">\u201cThis is the first time we have taken on an organisation of this size in a Scope 3 project. It often represents the largest share of a company\u2019s total climate impact, but it is also the most difficult to measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-color-1-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\">The CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) requires companies in the EU to report on their impacts on people and the environment \u2013 including climate impacts across the entire value chain according to Scope 1, 2 and 3.
