Ahnviks Papper is making climate calculations for CSRD

Complete climate calculations for effective sustainability strategy

Ahnviks Papper, part of the NYAH Group and a leading supplier of packaging, hygiene products, and office materials, has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable operation. With the support of Miljögiraff, they have conducted a comprehensive climate calculation covering all aspects of their organization and the products they sell, thereby mapping out the path forward in accordance with the CSRD framework. This initiative not only reflects the company’s own ambitions to reduce environmental impact but also responds to the growing customer demand and regulatory requirements.

Climate calculations as a part of the double materiality analysis

What is a double materiality analysis? The analysis is a method used to identify and prioritize the most important sustainability issues for a company. It is based on two perspectives: how sustainability issues affect the company’s economy and business model, and how the company’s operations impact society and the environment. The aim is to gain a comprehensive view of which issues are most significant, both for the company itself and for the surrounding world, and to use this insight in planning and sustainability reporting.

From rough estimates to detailed insight

Miljögiraff began the work with an environmental spend analysis – a well-established and cost-effective tool for creating a comprehensive overview of climate impact, including the impact from their entire product range.By linking the company’s financial reports to climate impact per currency unit, Ahnviks Papper gained an initial overview of its Scope 3 emissions, which include the impact from its entire product range.

Building on the environmental spend analysis, hotspots were identified, highlighting the parts of the product range and suppliers with the greatest climate impact. The next step in the analysis was to improve data quality, either through product-specific LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) or EPD (Environmental Product Declarations) reports from suppliers or by using generic models based on specific materials, country of manufacture, and the proportion of recycled material in the products. Miljögiraff conducted a deeper analysis of specific material flows and products. Using advanced LCA tools like SimaPro, product models were developed that provide a more precise representation of reality compared to the broader estimates of the environmental spend analysis.

“Ahnviks and our group have gained much greater insight into where our impact lies through this project. We have also received the tools to work towards our established climate goals. Throughout the entire process, we as a company have relied on data and information to make better choices for our business.” (translated from Swedish)

End-of-life management as a unique advantage

A particularly important aspect of the analysis for Ahnviks Papper is considering the end-of-life management of products (Scope 3.12), as different disposal scenarios are crucial for their type of products.
Miljögiraff developed a model that links material flows to end-of-life scenarios, an uncommon but significant component in climate calculations. This provided Ahnviks Papper with insights into how they can optimize and extend the lifecycle of their products.

The Result: A Plan for the Future
Thanks to the improved data quality, Ahnviks Papper now has a solid foundation to:

  • Prioritizing the environmental work
  • Communicating sustainability improvements to suppliers and customers.
  • Develop concrete and quantifiable suggestions for improvement

With the support of the ESRS E1 framework and Miljögiraff’s expertise, Ahnviks Papper is well-equipped to navigate the CSRD requirements while strengthening its position as a responsible and sustainable player in the industry.

us”Besides what we have previously stated—that this gives us the opportunity to identify and improve the climate impact of our own operations—it also enables us to become our customers’ best advisors in making their purchases more circular and sustainable. This would not be possible without an expanded knowledge of the impact of the products we market, as well as a deep understanding of our own impact. This insight allows us to future-proof our business and be well-prepared for upcoming challenges.” (translated from Swedish)
